A six night residency came to a close last night as Jackie Greene held another concert at Sweetwater Music Hall in Mill Valley, California. The finale once again featured one of Greene’s studio albums played in its entirety, with Saturday’s show offering a rendering of the 2015 full-length, Back To Birth.
Previous nights of the residencey saw first set track-for-track performances of Greene’s 2002 album Gone Wanderin’, 2004’s Sweet Somewhere Bound, 2006’s American Myth, 2008’s Giving Up the Ghost and 2010’s Till the Light Comes. Each show also incorporated rarities, covers and other songs that were often part of setlists when the record being covered was initially issued.
Greene and his band mates – guitarist Nathan Dale, fiddler/keyboardist Jason Crosby, bassist Jon Cornell and drummer Fitz Harris – opened Saturday’s show with the Back To Birth lead track “Silver Lining.” The group progressed through the other 10 songs on the album, closing out the first set with the LP’s title track.
Set two Saturday kicked off with the Back To Birth bonus tracks “One Bad Love” and “Jealous Man.” A cover of Traffic’s “Medicated Goo” and the Grateful Dead regularly paired staple “China Cat Sunflower” > “I Know You Rider” filled out the rest of the set. Greene encored with the Dead’s “Jack Straw” and The Beatles’ “Don’t Let Me Down.”
