March 31, 2017 - "Till The Light Comes" - Live At Sweetwater Music Hall Jackie Greene continued his residency at Sweetwater Music Hall in Mill Valley, California Friday night. The penultimate performance of the six-show run once again featured one of Greene’s studio albums played in full, with Friday’s concert kicking off with the 2010 record Till The Light Comes.
The multi-instrumentalist and his band featuring bassist Jon Cornell, drummer Fitz Harris on drums, guitarist Nathan Dale and fiddler/keyboardist Jason Crosby had so far performed Greene’s 2002 album Gone Wanderin’, 2004’s Sweet Somewhere Bound, 2006’s American Myth and 2008’s Giving Up the Ghost. The Sweetwater residency shows have also seen covers and other songs that were often part of setlists when each album was originally released.
The 10-song first set started with the Till The Light Comes opening track “Shaky Ground.” The song-for-song replication of the record featured “Stranger In Sand,” “Medicine,” “Grindstone,” “A Moment Of Temporary Color,” “Spooky Tina,” “1961” and “Take Me Back In Time” and “The Holy Land.” The first set drew to an end with the album’s closing title track.
The second set began with the rarely played “Follow That Monkey” which Jackie wrote for the Curious George 2 children’s movie. A cover of Bob Dylan’s “Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door” came next ahead of the Till The Light Comes bonus track “Revolution Man.” Set two also saw a take on “Back To The Bottom” and a cover of the Grateful Dead’s “Sugaree.” The encore was another over of a Dead classic as “Scarlet Begonias” punctuated the show.
Jackie Greene will perform his album Back To Birth tonight at Sweetwater with a free webcast presented via Facebook Live. Watch the complete Till The Light Comes show from last night below:
